"art" fair catastrophe

as a recent addition to the "local" population of ann arbor, michigan, the upcoming (tomorrow) chaos of what is affectionately known as the "art fair" has taken on a whole new meaning. the traffic is obscene, the people who inundate the city are obnoxious (can anyone imagine parallel parking a vehicle designed for military combat in downtown a2? these people can...unfortunately.), and worst of all the atmosphere is that of an opening day at Walmart: complete with screaming, sticky children, over-zealous vendors and local store owners alike claiming the "best discounts" around (not true.), and sweat-drenched metro-detroiters in khaki shorts and white polos clamoring for the over-priced knick-knacks masquerading as "art". whew. it is a bit overwhelming and i would like to announce that i will gladly buy a beer for anyone who wants to stop by AFTER the 'fair' to celebrate its end. Cheers!

(poppy & magenta)

Well, I've been sucked in yet again. First Friendster, now this. I'm sure as we speak all of my friends who have used LiveJournal religiously over the past few years are flocking to the newest and coolest website on which all sorts of fun things are happening and I will not get involved for years to come....To quote (paraphrase) Allison Janney (for wa) from a wonderful episode of the West Wing, 'Let's just forget that I am incredibly late to the party and just embrace the fact that I showed up at all.' Nevertheless, I am here. Interestingly enough, my impetus for joining (finally) tonight was a recent train of thought/story that reminded me of the sort of thing that I would read on my friends' livejournals...Do you know where the term "station wagon" came from? This ridiculous question popped into my head the other day while driving in downtown Ann Arbor on my way to drop off forms to my new school (UofMichigan School of Social Work)and I promptly found the answer on the internet (at www.stationwagon.com/history)...gotta love having these kinds of things at your fingertips...anywho, it comes from the fact that station wagons, or "depot hacks" as they were originally called, were primarily used for transporting people to and from train stations, or depots, much like cabs do today. (with "hack" being a slang term for "cabbie"). I'm enjoying the fact that my brain still has room for trivial knowledge like this before the inundation of educational material begins in September. The other big thing on my plate: incorporating the colors poppy and magenta into my redecorating plans for my bedroom. I'm thinking throw pillows, lots of throw pillows...
